I think everyone is going to agree with me on this post. There are so many things in the sports world that need to go, we are tired of it. This isn't just in the games, but in the writing, analysing, reporting and probably the worst, the fans posting in chats. It has gotten out of control. So here is my thoughts on what needs to go the way of the phrase "Jumped the Shark", which hopefully is finally out of circulation. In no particular order:
1. "Why does (blank) hate the (posters favorite team): This has gotten out of hand. Anytime a writer does a column that doesn't predict a fans favorite team to win a championship, the fan automatically assumes that everyone hates their team. Fans sometimes lose reality, but because one person doesn't predict your team to win a championship doesn't mean the nation hates your team. I think these fans expect every website to report only on their team, which would make Netflix a little more boring if it only had KC Royals '05 Season in Review, '06 Season in Review...etc. I am guessing those wouldn't make into many Queue's
2. "Why doesn't anyone respect the (fans favorite team): This was born in the NE area and its HQ still resides there. But the disease of this term is still spreading. It started with the Patriots winning the Super Bowl (the worst thing that could ever happen in the sporting world). They claimed no respect, ummm, maybe your 394 years of losing may have had something to do with it. It continues on and has spread. There are fans whose team won their first baseball game of the season and claimed no respect even though there are still 161 games left. Arrgh.
3. Announcers on Camera: Why is it that every time the camera is on the announcers of a certain game, that the person not speaking stares at the person that is? What are they thinking when they do this? Does Billy Packer look at Jim Nantz and think: "Wow, i wish i could part my hair", "I wonder who does his eyelids", or "Wow, that is one big ear". It is very creepy, are they taught this in broadcasting school, to only look at the camera when speaking. And if I was Billy Packer's partner (broadcast partner) they probably wouldn't let us on camera as when he is speaking i would probably be looking up in the air trying to pull my hair out, or trying to choke myself with one of the cords.
4. Non Stories: Alright, Alright, enough with a story everyday about Brett Favre, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, or Kobe Bryant. Enough, you hear me. These guys go take a pee and it is Breaking News. They say they are going to hold a press conference in 2 weeks and all of a sudden networks have there "Clemens - countdown to him telling us he isn't sure on retiring yet" ticker in the bottom corner of every broadcast. I am pretty sure that it isn't a requirement that their names appear in every broadcast, even the 3am broadcast of the World Badminton Championships on ESPN where an announcer will say "If these teams had Clemens and Farve, they would win"
5. Who had (date) in the (event) office pool: Writers and posters are getting lazy. Anytime something happens to an athlete they use this phrase "Who had March 30th in the Mark Prior Injury Office Pool. Its not funny anymore, not that it ever was.
6. ALL CAPS posters who whine about not being posted: Mostly on ESPN Sportsnation chats, it doesn't have to be all caps, but the people that post questions starting with "C'mon, no questions about the (favorite team) you must hate them", or "I have asked this (stupid question) and everyone is afraid to answer it about (crappy team). Most ESPN posters are unoriginal and borrow from others like it is some contest to see how many post they can get.
7. Time Outs in NBA: Seriously, why do they need so many timeouts. In the NFL, you get 3 per half, mainly to stop the clock. MLB you get zero. NHL you get 1 but they rarely use it. Why does the NBA need all the timeouts, is it so much more complicated than these other sports, i say no. You don't need 12 timeouts to tell the players "Once Kobe gets the ball he will shoot so get back on defense as he will probably miss"
8. Sports Movies: We had a great run several years ago with Caddyshack, Hoosiers, Rocky, Slap Shot, The Longest Yard, The Natural, Major League, and Field of Dreams. But those are classics, now we are mostly inundated with crap like Fever Pitch & Mr 3000. There are no more stories to tell, unless of course there is a biopic about Pacman Jones. (Actually i might write something about sports movies and ratings soon, might be a fun topic to tackle, ha, get it tackle, not only does it apply to football fans but fishing fans too)
9. Peyton Manning: No particular reason other than it might get him to stop making horrible commercials.
10. Clyde Drexler on Dancing with the Stars: Why, Why would i have to be exposed to this while flipping through the channels, it looked like Elaine's dance from Seinfeld, only she was 6'8" and had worse dance moves. I feel bad for the people who got kicked out before him.
Ok, so that is this post on what needs to go in sports, tomorrow (or tonight) i will take a look at some rules in the games that could be changed to make the games more fun.
