When i first read about the list and they said McHale was the best GM, i thought maybe the editors went out to happy hour, had a few too many, went back to the office and edited the list while accidently posting it or it was a reverse list, but then i thought of Matt Millen. I am from MN, and in no way is McHale an even marginal GM. Below i am going to go through the list and make some comments.
I am still trying to figure out their math on this, so i may offer some reasoning to why they selected who they did. This might be a two day adventure or i may skim the top 10 or so and then hit the high/low points for the rest of the list. There is so much to make fun of that i might have brain overload. One note: I know very little about the NHL, so if i am to make a comment, it will probably be to make fun of the GM's name. So here we go by rankings:
1. Kevin McHale, Timberwolves: Lets see, hmmm, was it the Cassell and a pick for Jaric (who must get points for millions made while on the bench) trade, signing Eddie Griffin and then resigning him, or signing Joe "I should have been a 2nd round pick" Smith to an illegal contract that vaulted him to #1. Looking at the ratings he got major points for Winning Improvement, well you take a 19 win team, you should see improvement, unless your in the NFL, in which case the '72 Dolphins would have you shot.
2. Kevin Feaster, Lightning: Seriously, that sounds more like a porn name than a NHL GM. But i digress. How ticked off is Canada that the top GM is from Tampa, where their NHL history stretches back to the 90's (1990's) and their low temp in the winter is somewhere in the 50's.
3. Billy King, 76'ers: I guess you get points for having a PG that shoots 40 times a game and ignores the rest of his team. Must be bonus points for actually finding some sucker to take that guy off your hands.
4. AJ Smith, Chargers: I guess firing a 14-2 coach and not getting along with anyone rates high on this list.
5. Lou Lamoriello, Devils: Not sure if there is even a Devil, but if there was, wouldnt this be a cool name for him.
6. Don Waddell, Thrashers: In my attempt to continue with my lack of NHL knowledge, i have one serious point to make here: Waddell Thrashers, i bet at least half of you giggled.
7. Marty Hurney, Panthers: I am pretty sure this is a made up name and Carolina has Dean Smith running the show, hence all the senior citizens on the roster.
8. Jerry Angelo, Bears: Obviously the rankings for NFL GM's didnt include QB's, WR's, TE's, or Defensive players ammunition levels as part of the grading process.
9. Bill Polian, Colts: I am pretty sure his high "Payroll Containment" ranking is due to the fact that this conversation took place; Bill: "Peyton, instead of paying you $40 million, we are going to pay you $19 million" Peyton: "Uh, Ok, i can spell geek, oohhh, look a bug, he he he"
10. John Paxson, Bulls: I didnt realize that past championships as a player was one of the rankings, either that or 7 wins against superior teams is the magic number to be ranked higher.
Ok, this is kinda fun, i think i might continue this and post the next 10 yet tonight. With the rest coming later this week.
